Abstract

The topic of this study is The Use of portfolio assessment as student’s speaking achievement (An Action Research of the Eleventh Graders of SMK Triatma Jaya Semarang in the academic year of 2011/2012). The objectives of the study were to know how to use portfolio assessment in students’ speaking achievement and to describe what are the advantages and disadvantages of using portfolio as student’s assessment in students’ speaking achievement in mastering simple expression conversations after being taught by using portofolio as students’ task especially in conversations in vocational high school. In order to achieve those objectives, I conducted an action research. The population of this study was the tenth graders of SMK Triatma Jaya Semarang. The action research group was 10th graders. The class was taught by using portofolio as student’s task, especially simple expression using command and request, I taught them using conversation text from text book and after they got the lesson I ask them to make portofolio task using video recording and after they submitted I evaluated the task. Based on the result of the study, the Cycle I test mean score of action research using portfolio task was (61). The Cycle II-test mean score was (75). Therefore, it shows the improvement of the students speaking ability from cycle I test to cycle II test.
