Abstract

Sociolinguistics involves in social website like facebook. It has social function in language because most of us access it very often; more than five times a day. Via facebook‟s applications we can interact with another user. With facebook, language function can be purposed. The study aimed at finding out the topics of compliment used in It Girl game online on facebook and the use of compliments based on gender of participants. The data were taken from twenty It Girl compliment expressions and ten males and females respondents‟ opinion using questionnaire distributed to five students of grade 2006, five students of grade 2007, five students of grade 2008 English Department of State University of Semarang and five foreigners. Nessa Wolfson and Janet Holmes‟ framework was employed to analyze the data. Based on the data analysis, I found that appearance was the highest frequency (55 per cent). There were other topics of compliment used; ability (35 per cent), specific act (10 per cent), and possession (only 5 per cent). And the most frequent participant involved in the act of complimenting was female to female (45 per cent). The others were male to female (27,5 per cent), female to male (20 per cent), and the last male to male (7,5 per cent). The finding suggested that we should be aware of the sociolinguistics in communication which show the proper giving compliment based on gender of participants and with proper topics of compliment for the betterment of sociolinguistic competence to reach the goal of sociolinguistic function
