Abstract

This final project is about the compatibility studies on the reading materials and the exercises in the textbook ‘English in Focus 3’ with the School Based Curriculum. The objectives of this study are to find out the relevance of the text types of reading materials in the textbook ‘English in Focus 3’ with School Based Curriculum and to describe the relevance of the reading exercises found in the textbook ‘English in Focus 3’ with the reading basic competences in School Based Curriculum. In conducting the research, the writer used a qualitative research in order to achieve the objectives of the study. First, she took the copy of the reading materials and the reading exercises of the textbook. Second, she analyzed the data by comparing them with the School Based Curriculum. At last, she gave the interpretation on the findings. The results of the analyses showed that in the text type analysis, the writer found four procedural texts, four report texts and two narrative texts in the reading materials of the textbook. All of them are well structured. In the analysis of the reading exercises, the writer found 1 pronunciation and intonation exercises, 8 comprehension exercises, 3 vocabulary exercises, 2 grammar exercises, and 2 rhetorical development exercises about procedural texts. Meanwhile, in the report texts, there are 3 pronunciation and intonation exercises, 14 comprehension exercises, 6 vocabulary exercises, 1 grammar exercise, and 5 rhetorical development exercises. In the narrative texts, she found 2 pronunciation and intonation exercises, 3 comprehension exercises, 3 vocabulary exercises, 3 grammar exercises and no rhetorical development exercise. Based on the result of the study, the writer concluded that all the text types of the reading materials in the textbook entitled ‘English in Focus 3’ are compatible with the School Based Curriculum. Furthermore, the textbook is enriched with the reading exercises. All of the reading basic competences are implemented in the reading exercises of the textbook. However, there is incompatibility between the exercises and the curriculum. There is no exercise dealing with rhetorical development of the narrative texts.
