Key words: editorial text, systemic functional linguistic, textual meaning, theme and rheme The topic of this study is an analysis of textual meaning in Our Tainted Democracy a Jakarta Post editorial. In this study, the discussion was limited by finding out the answer of these questions: What are the elements of textual meaning based on the systemic functional approach? How the clauses in Our Tainted Democracy are structured to realize textual meaning? Qualitative descriptive research approach was used in this study. The clauses found in this article were described through the use of textual variables: theme and rheme. The technique which was used were choosing and analyzing the data to make conclusions through the editorial text. The data of the study are article from an editorial opinion text entitled Our Tainted Democracy from www.thejakartapost.com. While, from library research, the writer selected some references and text books related to the subject matter. The subject of the study was sentences in Our Tainted Democracy written by Meidyatama Suryodiningrat and published by The Jakarta Post on Thursday, June 16th 2011. Our Tainted Democracy consists of 14 paragraphs and 27 clauses. The analysis of the data employed the following steps: Firstly each editorial text was divided into class clauses. Secondly, they were analyzed through the system of textual meaning and hidden agenda theory. Thirdly, the method of theme development was explained. The last step was drawing conclusions based on the findings. After analyzing the textual meaning of the clauses found in the editorial text, the researcher found that 27 clauses consist of four marked themes, one interpersonal theme, six textual themes and one dependent clause as theme. The most field occur in editorial text is about the investigations of scandals happened in Indonesia at that time. The analysis of textual meaning has resulted in conclusion of theme and rheme. All the models found from editorial text are written text. Therefore, the English students should enhance the writing skills by doing discourse analysis. In addition, they can get a new point of view in appreciating editorial text which gives contribution to journalism discourse improvement. It is recommended that further researcher who conducts the same issues get more thorough and unequivocal knowledge about textual meaning and generally about discourse analysis.
