Supervisor: I. Dr. Dwi Rukmini, M.Pd. II. Dr. Dwi Anggani Linggar B. M. Pd. Key words: role play, speaking, transactional dialogues, action research. The statements of the problems which were solved in this study were, firstly what the difficulties are encountered by the students in mastering or improving their speaking skill in transactional dialogues. Secondly, how role playing can be applied as a strategy to overcome the difficulties encountered by the students in improving their speaking skill in transactional dialogues. This action research needed five meetings which divided into preliminary research and two cycles. There were two meetings for each cycle. The use of role play technique in this study had an aim at developing students’ ability in mastering transactional dialogues. I used a real action of the teacher in response to a certain problem encountered during the teaching and learning process through cycles of action. It was an action research that used eleventh grade students of accounting department of State Vocational High School 2 Purworejo in the first semester of the academic year 2011/2012 as the subject of the research. Based on the data analysis, it could be said that role play techniques were successfully improved the students’ ability in mastering transactional dialogues. The students’ improvements were shown by the students’ interest in responding the questions and their motivation in taking part of the activities in the learning process. It meant that there was a better participation of the students in the classroom. Therefore, it indicated that role play techniques definitely developed a better students’ behaviour in mastering transactional dialogues. In line with the result, I propose that role play is one of the positive ways to overcome students’ difficulties in learning transactional dialogues. This result hopefully will motivate the teachers to use the role play technique in their classroom activities, especially in the process of mastering transactional dialogues.
