Abstract

Mayasari, Jenny.2010. The Communication System of Tibetans Reflected in Seven Years in Tibet. Final Project. English Department. Languages and Arts Faculty, Semarang State University. First Advisor: Dr.A.Faridi, MPd. Second Advisor: Dra. Rahayu Puji H.,M.hum. Keywords: Communication, Structuralism, Tibetan mythology. This final project is made to fullfill the requirements for Sarjana Sastra Degree in English and also to share with the readers about the communication system of Tibetans in the form of the structure. The objectives of this study are to analyze communication system of Tibetans including how is Tibetan described in the movie and how is the communication develops. I used qualitative approach with the procedures collecting the data, watching the movie and reading the movie script, identifying overall the data in the form of quotation, putting the data into the table, and classifying, selecting and reporting into appendices. This study used structuralism approach. The communication in Tibet builds a structure in it; there is a structure of how Dalai Lama communicates with his society and also how society talks to their highest leader. Communication between Dalai Lama and his society is very unique. Tibetans believe that Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of Avalokitesvara. They really respect him very much even in their communication there are many rules to follow when they are talking to Dalai Lama. The effect of this behavior related to their religion makes Tibetans become very religious in their daily life; they are very humble; Besides, they always consider spiritual aspect everytime they do something. Each behavior means something that related to the spiritual aspect and Dalai Lama becomes their guidance in their spiritual life. I can conclude that the communication System in Tibetan is developed very fast through the sources. Sources are from Dalai Lama and the foreigners as the center of communication. It is difficult for the Tibetans to talk directly to Dalai Lama because of the Hierarchy. Yet, the Tibetans still received the information from other source from foreigners through the media such as goods, movie, music, radio and pamphlet. Finally, this study is expected to give more knowledge about Tibet in the structuralism’s view. Structuralism is challenging because first, I had to figure out the structural pattern of the story before achieving the meaning. By analyzing Seven Years in Tibet, the readers are expected to get more knowledge about Tibet. About the communication system in Tibetan and I suggest that Seven Years in Tibet is a good movie that can be used as the material in literary classes. It contains several values that can be taught to students of English Department.
