Fransiskawati, Lina. 2010. Improving the Students’ Speaking Ability in Giving an Opinion through the Focusing-Oriented English Teaching Technique (An Analysis of Psychotherapy Technique Applied in Experiential Learning of English as a Foreign Language in the Case of Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gubug in the Academic Year 2009/2010). Final Project, Undergraduate Program of English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University. Advisors: I. Rohani, S. Pd., M.A., II. Prof. Dr. Mursid Saleh, M. A Key words: The Focusing-oriented English Teaching Technique, Speaking Ability, Giving Opinion This final project is about the focusing-oriented English teaching as a teaching technique in teaching speaking especially in giving opinion. The aim of this final project is to explain and describe how well the students’ speaking ability in giving an opinion is after being implemented with the focusing-oriented English teaching technique and to find out the students’ speaking ability improvement in giving opinion after applying the focusing-oriented English teaching technique. The research methodology was classroom action research. The population of the study was the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gubug in the academic year 2009/2010. The subject of this study is 24 students consist of 12 males and 12 females. I used the pre cycle test, treatments of cycle 1, post-test of cycle 1, treatments of cycle 2, and post-test cycle 2 to gather the data. As soon as they finished the pre-test, they were given treatments, taught by using the focusing-oriented English teaching technique. The post-test was given after the treatments. Each cycle consisted of a teaching learning process and post-test. I also used the field notes and questionnaire to support the primary data and to observe the situation of the class during each cycle of the study. The result of the study was analyzed statistically. The result showed that the students’ speaking ability in giving opinions improved as shown from the mean score: 52.5 in the pre-test, 63.17 in the cycle 1 test, and 80 in the cycle 2 test. Based on the result above, I conclude that the implementation of the focusing-oriented English teaching technique for learning English is very beneficial and applicable for the eight grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gubug in the academic year 2009/2010 since the technique helped students solve their problem in speaking especially in giving opinion. The technique also made students better in speaking English generally. I suggest that the English teachers use focusing-oriented English teaching as an additional technique to help students in finding ideas in giving opinion. In addition, this technique improved the students’ fluency in speaking English because they were used to speak English when they express their opinion to others.
