A Final Project. English Department. Languages and Arts Faculty. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Dr. Djoko Sutopo, M.Si, Second Advisor: Dr. Dwi Anggani L.B., M.Pd. Key words: vocabulary, reading, folktale, action research. The objective of the study is to find out how the students achievement in learning vocabulary through Lao and the Fish folktale as the reading material to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery. In this research, I used an action research to achieve the aim of the study. It refers to the research applying a set of procedures which are used for problem’s solving under investigation. I used questionnaire and vocabulary test to collect the data. The population of this research is 32 students of the eight grade of SMPN 2 Karangawen in the academic year 2010/2011. Since the research was about reading activity, the writer organized the classroom in four activities. Pre-test was given in the first activity; here the students had to answer 25 multiple choice items given by the writer. The second and third activities were for treatments, and the fourth activity was closed by giving Post-test, the same as the Pre-test. The technique of teaching English vocabulary by using folktale presented in this final project proved to be better, it can be seen from the result in the pre-test of 50% and the post-test of 96%. It is suggested that (1) English teachers should give the students appropriate reading materialsuch as folktale to expand their vocabulary competence, (2) the students need repetition to learn vocabulary, use good and standard dictionary and keep the vocabulary note books.
