Abstract

Palupi, Fiqih Nindya. 2011. Classroom Magazine as a Project Work to Motivate Students to Improve Their Writing Skill (The Case of the Second Grade Students of SMA N 11 Semarang in the Academic Year 2010/2011). Final Project. English Department. Languages and Arts Faculty. Semarang State University. Dr. Djoko Soetopo, M.Si., advisor I, Drs. Alim Sukrisno, M.A., advisor II. Keywords: classroom magazine, project work, improvement, motivation, writing skill. This study is a qualitative study about the effectiveness of creating classroom magazine as a project work in motivating students to improve their writing skill. Primarily, this study aims to improve students' skill in writing by creating a classroom magazine which focused on one significant problem: how effective is classroom magazine as a project work to motivate students to improve their writing skill in second grade students of SMA N 11 Semarang? The population of this study was the second grade students of SMA N 11 Semarang, a total of 281 students. I took 10% out of the population as the sample. The sample was chosen by using lottery random sampling. The data were collected through a writing test. Besides, the questionnaire was also given to support the data. In order to further know the student's achievement in detail; I used the following formula to find out the mean of students’ score in each test: and The result of the study showed that an improvement in the students’ achievement had happened after they got some treatments. It was proven by the comparison between the result of pre-test and test of cycle II in which the result of the test of cycle II was higher (85.45 %) than the result of the pre-test (68.43%). It means that the method used in this study was applicable in that school. Based on the result of the study, it is concluded that the method of using classroom magazine as a project work in teaching writing was effective for the second grade students of SMA N 11 Semarang since the method could motivate them to improve their writing skill. Referring to my experiences of the study, it is suggested for English teachers to use this method as an additional method to motivate students to improve their writing skill. The students can use the classroom magazine as a medium to develop and train their writing skill and creativities, and to share their ideas with others.
