Abstract
In learning a new language, the learners have to learn the word first before the other components. Since the students of Islamic junior high school have to master other foreign language besides English, that is Arabic, and tend to use it more, they pay less attention to the English lesson. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out whether the use of chicktionary game is effective to improve the students’ English word understanding or not. This study conducted through experimental study. The subject is the seventh grade students of MTs Rohmatullah Cokro, Grabag, Magelang. Before I conducted my experiment in MTs Rohmatullah Cokro, I tried the test out first in MTs Ma’arif 2 Grabag in order to get a valid and reliable test. Then, in conducting my experiment, I gave a pre test, four times treatments, four times quizzes, and a post test. I see the result of the mean scores of the experimental group and the control group. In the experimental group, the mean score of the pre test is 46.38 and the mean score of the post test is 76.46. The difference between the two means in experimental group is 30.08. While in the control group, the mean score of the pre test is 50.33 and the mean score of the post test is 63.56. The difference between the two means in the control group is 13.23. Based on the statistical analysis, it can be seen that the improvement of the experimental group is higher than the control group. I conclude that improving the students’ English word understanding by using chicktionary game is an effective way. Therefore, I suggest to the English teachers to use chicktionary game as a teaching media.
